The Superstars of the Orlando Pride

Orlando loves soccer — or European football, if you prefer — and we have the teams to prove it! Part of the National Women’s Soccer League since 2016, the Orlando Pride play at Inter&Co Stadium in downtown Orlando, which is also home to their male counterparts in Orlando City Soccer Club.

Zora Neale Hurston

As already seen in this blog, most heroes don’t wear capes. Some prefer hats, including acclaimed, ever-stylish African American author Zora Neale Hurston. Best known for her 1937 novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Hurston grew up in the oldest all-Black municipality still in existence today: historic Eatonville, just north of Orlando. The town celebrates Hurston’s influence and works at the Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts, where admission is always free (donations are encouraged).

Eatonville also hosts the annual ZORA!® Festival Season, encompassing a wide range of programming that kicks off every January. One of the season’s most popular events is October’s HATitude Cultural Flair, which pays homage to Hurston’s love of haberdashery while benefiting academic programs for students.

Walt Disney World® Resort

After decades of being auctioned at Magic Kingdom® Park’s Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, the famous Redhead — now officially known as Redd — made headlines in 2018 when she flipped the script by becoming the auctioneer. Now that she’s in charge, the auction deals in objects and livestock instead of humans. What’s more, Redd isn’t the only powerful woman at Disney’s premier Orlando theme park.
