Explore zip lining, river tours and more outdoor fun with accessibility advocate Amanda Perla.
Orlando is known worldwide for its unforgettable attractions, many of which offer accessibility-focused programs designed to welcome travelers of all abilities. For visitors with disabilities or mobility needs, finding experiences that combine nature, excitement and true accessibility can feel limiting. But Orlando is proving that outdoor recreation doesn’t have to be off-limits. Across Central Florida, attractions and tour operators are thoughtfully adapting their experiences, ensuring all guests can participate.
Discover: Accessible Orlando
As an accessibility advocate, wheelchair user, and founder of NextStep Orlando Paralysis Recovery Center, I recently explored four unique activities that challenge common misconceptions about accessibility. Outdoor adventures are about more than sightseeing — they’re about movement, fresh air and connecting with nature. For travelers with disabilities, accessible experiences create opportunities to explore without missing out on the excitement.
Discover: Outdoor Orlando
From zip lining above a gator marsh to floating along protected waterways and witnessing glowing bioluminescence, accessible adventure exists well beyond the theme parks. Together, these experiences highlight how Central Florida is expanding access to outdoor adventure and redefining what’s possible for travelers with disabilities. Let’s dive in!

Gator Gauntlet at Gatorland
Calling all disabled thrill-seekers! Zip lining is often assumed to be off limits for guests with mobility challenges. Not at Gatorland. The Gator Gauntlet adaptive harness system and trained staff at the Screamin’ Gator Zip Line make it possible to soar above the lush gator marsh safely and confidently.

Flying over gator filled waters, the sense of freedom is exhilarating — a reminder that adventure doesn’t have to stop because of a disability. Beyond zip lining, Gatorland also offers shows, train rides, thousands of real alligators, and a “Trainer for a Day” experience where you can feed gators and spend time with capybaras, adding a hands-on wildlife encounter to an already unforgettable visit.
River Tours at Wekiva Island
The Wekiva Wild River Tour offers a peaceful and scenic way to experience the natural beauty of one of Florida’s most beautiful waterways, the Wekiva River. It’s just 20 minutes north of Orlando, with tours launching daily from Wekiva Island.
While the boat wasn’t originally designed for accessibility, it has been thoughtfully adapted to accommodate guests with certain mobility challenges or disabilities. Boarding does require some assistance, but Captain Angel is incredibly helpful and makes the process smooth and supportive. Once on board, there’s plenty of space to maneuver, making it easy to relax and enjoy the slow drift along the river.
The tour is rich with Florida wildlife — from turtles to alligators to the lush riverbank scenery — and Captain Angel shares fascinating insight throughout the journey. While the loading area could be more accessible, accessible parking at Wekiva Island is excellent, and the property offers a full day of accessible-friendly fun. You can rent paddleboards, canoes or kayaks, relax in a private cabana, enjoy food from the Without a Paddle food truck, or grab refreshing drinks from the Tooting Otter.
Accessible Kayaking at the Brevard Zoo
I originally visited Brevard Zoo to try their accessible kayaking tour, a wetlands adventure made possible through the EZ Launch Accessible Transfer System. This feature is funded by the Reeve Foundation, an organization that means a lot to me and one that I’ve worked with previously because of my spinal cord injury. Unfortunately, the water was too high on the day of my visit, so kayaking wasn’t possible. Even without getting on the water, Brevard Zoo still offered an incredibly accessible and enjoyable experience.
The pathways throughout the zoo are wide, smooth and easy to navigate, making it simple to explore at your own pace. My favorite moment of the visit was feeding a giraffe — a fun, up-close encounter that’s accessible for many guests and such a memorable part of the day. The zoo is also extremely kid-friendly, with hands-on exhibits, interactive educational areas and plenty of shaded spaces that make it great for families of all ages and abilities.
Bioluminescent Tours at BK Adventure
Experiencing bioluminescence — a natural phenomenon in which living organisms seem to glow before your eyes — is a truly magical Florida moment, and BK Adventure offers a way for guests with various disabilities to enjoy it up close. Choose from group rafting or clear-bottom kayak tours to suit your needs. Boarding may require some assistance, but the staff is patient, helpful and committed to making sure everyone feels safe and comfortable.
Once settled, it’s all about the water glowing beneath you — a mesmerizing experience that is straight out of a dream! This tour is a true bucket list item in Central Florida. BK Adventure also offers sunset excursions, dolphin tours and manatee tours for additional ways to explore Florida’s waterways and wildlife.
Choose Your Own Accessible Eco-Adventure
When planning outdoor experiences, it’s always helpful to call ahead and ask specific accessibility questions. Many variables can impact what's possible, so flexibility is key. Adventure looks different for everyone — and that’s okay.
Whether you’re seeking thrills, wildlife encounters or peaceful moments in nature, there are options that allow you to participate in ways that feel safe, supported and empowered. For travelers with disabilities, Orlando offers more than world-famous attractions — it offers opportunities to connect with nature, try something new and experience our beautiful destination beyond the theme parks.
