Planning the Perfect Halloween Day for Kids in Orlando

In 2017, trick-or-treating, fun attractions and pumpkin treats make Orlando the Halloween Vacation Capital for families.

As the Halloween Vacation CapitalSM, Orlando offers 10 full weeks of activities devoted to the spookiest holiday of them all. It all culminates on Oct. 31, which is so packed with family-friendly frights, you can spend the entire day celebrating the holiday with your kids — including many activities at little to no cost. From free trick-or-treat events to other fun ways to go bump in the night (and day!), here's your guide to the ultimate Halloween family adventure in Orlando.

Halloween Morning in Orlando

If you can wait until 10 a.m., you can have a truly decadent Halloween breakfast by eating Sweet By Holly, which is operated by three-time Cupcake Wars winner Hollis "Miss Holly" Wilder. The shop is in the Waterford Lakes neighborhood, approximately 15 minutes from downtown Orlando. Alternately, stop by Blue Bird Bake Shopin Orlando's Audubon Park neighborhood, approximately 20 minutes from downtown, for their Pumpkin Whoopie Pies.

With some sweets in your tummy, head to Crayola Experience, which is at The Florida Mall. There, you can celebrate a "Screamin' Green Hauntoween." Kids are invited to wear costumes and trick-or-treat. They can also explore 25 hands-on attractions, including Halloween-themed crafts, character photo-ops, scavenger hunts and even a slime class.

Halloween Afternoon in Orlando

If you're ready for a pick-me-up, you'll find that lots of Orlando restaurants have pumpkin-infused treats at this time of year. One of the sweetest can be found at Jeremiah's Italian Ice, which has locations throughout Orlando, including several just 15 minutes from Universal Orlando and Disney World. Drop in for a Pumpkin Pie Ice that tastes just like its namesake and can be paired with vanilla ice cream.

Next, head to Ripley's Believe It or Not! Orlando Odditorium. Here, you can explore a vast array of weird, unusual and entertaining displays and relics, including some spooky sights. You can easily spend a couple of hours taking a leisurely, self-guided tour through the premises.

Just down the street at ICON Orlando 360, ICON Orlando features a giant spider and is cast in its best Halloween colors in honor of the holiday! The popular entertainment, dining and shopping destination is a great place to get dinner, and don't forget about its other attractions. For instance, if there was ever a perfect day to visit Skeletons: Museum of Osteology, this is it.

Also, check out the Orlando Halloween-themed Snapchat geofilter while you're in the area through Oct. 31. Take a selfie before it's gone and share it with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Halloween Evening in Orlando

Now comes the hard part: Picking one of several free, trick-or-treat events taking place throughout the Orlando area. Below are our favorites.

  • Halloween at Cranes Roost Park: This event is in Altamonte Springs, approximately 15 minutes north of Orlando. It runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Kidgits Boo Bash and Mall-Wide Trick-or-Treating: From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., trick-or-treat at The Florida Mall, which is about 25 minutes from Walt Disney World.
  • Spooky Hollow: In addition to trick-or-treating from 6 pm. to 8 p.m., this celebration includes carnival rides. It's about 30 minutes north of downtown Orlando in Sanford.
  • Trick-or-Treat at Waterford Lakes Town Center: Participating stores at this shopping district, which is 20 minutes east of downtown Orlando, will have free candy for kids from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Also this evening, Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is taking place at Magic Kingdom. While Halloween night is sold out, so this won't be an option if you haven't already secured tickets, other select nights are still available through Nov. 1.

Similarly, SeaWorld Orlando and LEGOLAND Florida Resort are offering Halloween festivities for kids of all ages that are included with regular park admission, but the last day for both is Oct. 29. If you haven't already, make plans to attend them both before time runs out.
