Even ‘Food on a Stick’ Is a Gourmet Delight in Orlando
They say there's a holiday for every concern, and to prove it, March 28 is the food-focused "National Something on a Stick Day!" While such branding might evoke carnival fare, the more than 5,000 restaurants in Orlando's ever-expanding dining scene provide lots of gourmet options to help you celebrate the holiday, including these seven winners.
1. Churrasco-Grilled Meats at Black Fire Brazilian Steakhouse
Founded in Orlando, this authentic Brazilian steakhouse is a great place to go if you're feeding some big appetites, as the expertly grilled meats, salad and other menu items are unlimited. Speaking of meats, you'll have a lot to choose from, including grilled beef, lamb, chicken and pork — and though they won't leave the stick with you, the meat is presented on one before carving. The restaurant is just five minutes from Walt Disney World Resort.
2. Lollipop Tree at The Edison
While you're in the Disney area enjoying the first item on our list, be sure to check out this Industrial Gothic-themed restaurant and lounge that's providing all-new reasons to visit Disney Springs. The menu focuses on upscale American comfort food with lots of eclectic surprises along the way, including a dessert that's sure to "stick" in your mind: the Lollipop Tree, the branches of which are pops made with cheesecake and bubblegum whipped cream.
3. Lamb Chops at Taverna Opa
Lamb Chops at Taverna Opa in Orlando
Lamb is a mainstay of Greek cuisine, and few Orlando eateries do authentic Greek fare as well as this restaurant, which can be found at Pointe Orlando on International Drive. And thanks to the bone-in nature of their lamb chops, this is a food that comes with its own stick! Marinated for 36 hours with fresh herbs and garlic, the dish is served with lemon potatoes and Yiayia vegetables.
4. Grilled Skewers at Dragonfly Robata Grill & Sushi
Part of Orlando's Restaurant Row on Sand Lake Road, and minutes from International Drive, Universal Orlando Resort and SeaWorld Orlando, this Japanese gastropub focuses on traditional robata grilling techniques using hot charcoal and the freshest possible ingredients. While their menu is constantly evolving, delicious skewers in a variety of flavors are a regular part of their happy hour offerings, including chicken, bacon-wrapped asparagus, Wagyu tenderloin and more.
5. Elotes at Rocco's Tacos and Tequila Bar
Don't worry, we have some savory food-on-a-stick for vegetarians too! This acclaimed Mexican eatery and nightlife hotspot puts its own gourmet spin on the classic "Mexican street corn" recipe. The corn is grilled with cotija cheese, chipotle mayo, cilantro and the restaurant's in-house "Rocco's spice" to create a true flavor fiesta. Look for them on Sand Lake Road as part of Orlando's Restaurant Row.
6. Island Kabobs at Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville
This laid-back, tropical-themed restaurant's menu is influenced by the "Parrothead" sensibilities of its famous founder, including this easygoing entrée. Served with a chipotle demi, it comes with beef and chicken skewers, as well as island rice and sweet plantains, and it all pairs perfectly with one of the eatery's signature margaritas. You'll find them at Universal CityWalk.
7. Artisanal Popsicles at La Palette
Admittedly, summertime in Orlando can be hot — but you can beat the heat with a sweet treat on a stick at this artisanal pop-bar! They serve a rainbow of popsicles in more than 40 traditional and exotic flavors, and they're all made fresh on the premises using organic ingredients. They're located in Hunters Creek, just 15 minutes from Walt Disney World.
