Visit Orlando's Magical Dining Month Benefits Freedom Ride & BASE Camp

Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining Month, sponsored by American Express, has grown tremendously over the years. We are delighted to announce that this year – for the first time in the program’s history – we are able to help two organizations, Freedom Ride and BASE Camp Children’s Foundation. We are honored to have these two organizations join us for Magical Dining Month and we hope you share our excitement. Find out more about these amazing charities below.

Freedom Ride

Established in 1998, Freedom Ride provides therapeutic horseback riding and related activities to individuals with disabilities in the Central Florida area. Freedom Ride offers specially-selected therapy horses, certified instructors, and peaceful environments to improve the quality of life for children and adults with autism, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and many other disabilities.

In addition to improving core strength, balance, and physical aptitude, the Freedom Ride programs increase confidence and a sense of accomplishment. Many of the children have spent their lives in a wheelchair and – at Freedom Ride – the children become the leader of a magnificent 1,000 lb. horse. This improved quality of life not only happens in a peaceful outdoor environment; it also extends to their day-to-day lives, making life at school, at play, and at home physically and mentally easier.

Freedom Ride added a mental health program at their facility in 2016, serving individuals that can benefit from a therapy program working with the horses on the ground rather than riding. This unique therapy has proven to effectively address grieving, substance abuse and a variety of mental health issues.

BASE Camp

BASE is an acronym for: BELIEVE, ACHIEVE, SUPPORT, and EDUCATE. More than just words, those are BASE Camp’s most important core values. The BASE Camp mission is to provide a year-round base of support for children and families facing the challenge of living with cancer and other life-threatening hematology and oncology illnesses.

For more than 35 years, BASE Camp has been serving children affected by cancer. Focusing on helping the entire family through their time of need, BASE Camp serves children living and being treated at the three Orange County hospitals in addition to multiple counties in Central Florida.

It is a place where children can always find comfort, friends, nourishment, and encouragement – a tranquil place that inspires courage and wellness. BASE Camp sets up locations locally to help children stop, rest, eat, play, and gather together with friends to receive the encouragement and gain the strength they need to continue their journey through life.
