Reply 2012 was our 1st year to experience Magical Dining in Orlando. We now plan our travel to be in town during those dates. Big Fin, Napa, Hemingways-ALL exceptional! The Funky Monkey even played the Beatles: "When I'm 64" for my birthday.

Reply I ate at six different restaurants during Magical Dining Month. They were all good and here are my favorites in order... Fleming's, Fogo De Chao, Oceanaire, Spencer's, Vito's & Bosphorous. Did anybody eat at more than six?

Reply Cala Bella was our 5th restaurant this month. The food was fabulous Italian cuisine. Tender meatballs stuffed with gooey Mozzarella cheese and covered in a delightful marinara. Crisp calamari. Veal piccata came in a stack over angel hair & spinach. My diver scallops were plentiful an seared perfectly, served over sauteed spinach & shell macaroni. Have never seen creme brulee served as a toasty square, but was creamy confection as was the lemon-raspberry cheesecake. Will return.

Reply Went with a group of friends and we all LOVED it! The food was incredible, portions, taste and presentation did not disappoint. My friends and I will be back. the Happy Hour menu was great as well. Best touch was when the manager and also the owner came to our table to see how our experience was!

Reply We ate at four restaurants this time, and our favorite by far was Fogo De Chao. Not only was the food wonderful, but the service was impeccable. This was truly a great dining experience. They also did not skimp on portions like Morton's did on our first visit. We are locals in Orlando and I can't say I'd never visit Morton's again, although it wouldn't be my first choice, because of our magical dining experience, but you bet we'll be visiting Fogo de chao, and bringing all our out of town guests. We also loved Emeril's and Capital Grille. Can't wait to try a few more next year!

Reply Anytime I eat at places other than Luma, I end up wishing I'd gone to Luma instead. It's the best place to eat in all of Orlando, the service is always impeccable, and the menu is always different and delicious. I've tried to be adventurous, and it doesn't pay off. Luma on Park forever!

Reply Dragonfly was one of the best magical dining experiences we've had. The food was excellent, the service was just right, not hovering but never neglected. What I was most impressed with was the diverse menu offered for the month. Dragonfly offered one of the most varied samplings of selections and everything was expertly prepared. We will definitely be back. I give it five stars!

Reply Don't believe all the good press about Big Fin: we called ahead about a food allergy, the manager was happy to accommodate us. Got there in person, the waiter tried to upsell us to get food that wasn't that great. They're totally sending employees to stack the deck online.

Reply I had dinner with a friend on MDM last week. We both had the pork entree and enjoyed it very much. Our waiter was very helpful and the service was great! It was a busy rainy Friday night and we were stranded in the parking lot, we called to tell them and they said, "not to worry, wait for a break in the rain, so not to get soaked". Very accommodating to us.

Reply Had dinner at the Grand Cypress Hyatt Hemingway's last night. The hotel is undergong renovations but again we could not have been treated better and we have been going there for over 20 years or since it started as Grand Cypress. The people treated us wonderful from valet parking to the wonderful chefs and staff at Hemingway's. Best presentation and taste of shrimp scampi I have seen. The bread, conch chowder and crab cakes were over the top. Thanks. If you have not been to Hemingway's you are missing out!!!

Reply We had the most excellent dinner at Fleming's Prime Steakhouse last night. The food was wonderful, the service was impeccable, and the deal was wonderful. The Filet we got as our main course is normally $38.95 there not including the first and third course! They never treated us like "discount customers" either. We actually there also celebrating a work promotion and because they knew that that spoiled us even more with a "Congratulations" greeting card signed by the staff, a box of house made truffles, and a card to get a free appetizer on our next visit. Talk about over the top!

Had a very similar experience. Tried them last year on the MDM and have been back throughout the year. The food is always superb and so is the customer service. They have a fantastic happy hour too. Both locations are great, but I frequent the Winter Park one more due to the fact that it is just closer to home. Kudos to Flemings.

Subject: Citrus
09/27/12   07:58 AM
Reply Last night we decided to go to Citrus Restaurant. This is one of our regular dining spots, so we were happy to visit. When I called for reservations, it was made to sound like they were extremely busy so I had to change to 30 minutes earlier. Upon arrival, we were asked to sit outside because they were so busy (no tables filled inside). Turns out they had a large party in the back and another large party coming in later, but none of this was communicated to us. We ordered our food and after our appetizers came out and we ate them, the waiter tells us they are out of trout. That was the one dish we had come there for, so we had to switch to the steak and the shrimp & grits. The steak was ordered medium rare and came out literally raw in the middle. The shrimp & grits was not appealing to the eye and tasted just ok. We ordered one of each of the desserts. The chocolate torte was good, the key lime "pie" was like a key lime soup with a giant pile of graham cracker crumbs at the bottom. Because our food was not cooked correctly and we didn't eat most of it, the manager (Vanda) came out. She was more than helpful and apologetic. We told her that we were regular diners and we understand Magical Dining month and big parties are difficult, but that we would still be return customers because of our other great experiences there. Vanda told us that next time we came in to ask for the Trout & it would be on the house. When our check came, she had taken 50% off our food bill. We were not expecting anything like that and were very thankful for their gracious attitude. This restaurant also donates a lot to charity and I like that about the owners. Definitely try this place out...good people.

That's the right way for Citrus to handle a situation like that. I find that most Orlando restaurants, and especially the Magical Dining ones, do care about their customers and will usually do the right thing.

Reply This place lives up to all the rave reviews it has received. Tonight was my last evening to take advantage of magical dining month and I could not be more pleased with my final choice. I sat at the bar and had the most amazing service from Danielle and Susan. I ordered the 6 oysters raw for my appetizer, steak & lobster for dinner and key lime pie for dessert. They have an excellent wine selection to accompany this delicious food and I left fully satisfied. I will definitely return to this amazing establishment. If you have time before Magical Dining Month ends, I strongly encourage you to venture to Big Fin for a fabulous foodie adventure!

Reply Another extremely delicious steak. Bottle of wine offered on menu for $30 which is a good idea. We had a very attentive waiter. We booked meal for a Friday night and said we may be a bit late and they accommodated us by giving us a 15 minute window which was extremely generous as they were very busy that evening. We have been before and would thoroughly recommend this place as have never been let down on standard of food. We dined at Spencer's as Chicken was on the menu the time before as one of our party does not eat steak and does not eat fish either, so Spencer's offering the chicken was a nice subsitute. Would be good if Capital Grille could have that choice too.

Reply We had a fantastic meal at Spencers. Huge salad starter,Steak delicious and desert - chocoate pudding extremely tasty! One of our party's steak was ordered medium/rare and was put back twice as came rare, (they knocked this meal off the bill for us). Good service and nice surroundings although abit quiet in the restaurant on a Thursday evening. Good value for money but with a $65 BOTTLE OF WINE and service easly increased the bill by half.

Reply We ate at Big Fin on Saturday and it was wonderful. The free valet parking started the night off just right. We then walked around the beautiful shopping area while we waited for our reservation time. When we were seated we asked for the Magical Dining menu and received it with no problems. I had the steak sushi which was great and my husband had the oysters which were good too. We both had the surf and turf-the steak was good and the lobster was fantastic. Even the sides of mashed potatoes and asparagus were delicious. And the key lime pie was great. We sat outside and it was a very beautiful evening with great food and great service. We are just sorry we missed the first few weeks of this program. Big Fin is a Big YES!

Reply What a surprise (not that anything bad was expected)! Everything was fabulous, as expected; however, the Shrimp Scampi is not what you would expect...it is so much better! No shrimp thrown on top of pasta...the presentation was gorgeous and taste even better. The jasmine grits with the crab cakes was delightful. The chocolate banana dessert was also a surprise as it wasn't what I thought it was...no banana in site but a delightful banana creme filling. Highly recommend.

Reply The food was excellent and they have one of the best French onion soups I've ever had! The service was great and we enjoyed the food immensely. We ordered the crab cake and the shrimp scampi and I can easily say it is the best scampi I have ever had! They put their own spin on it but it was fantastic. Reply Big Fin was absolutely amazing. I had the steakhouse sushi roll (nothing to write home about, but decent), the filet mingon and lobster (which was incredible), and the key lime pie (good). My companion's a vegetarian so she ate off of the main menu - a salad and sushi roll. Make sure you have reservations - the place fills up fast. The main dining room is extremely noisy - very difficult to have a conversation. It isn't a very intimate place, the few booths are desined for larger groups and the tables are packed fairly close together. I had to ask for the magical dining menu but certainly wasn't treated badly for ordering from it. One important precaution - make sure you know where you're going, the Sand Lake Road street address is the back entrance, I'm glad I used my phone's GPS to get us there. Very crowded driveways and very little self-parking. Fortunately they've got free valet parking. As we were finishing our dinner I kidded that if it was a really classy place the waiter would ask us for our claim check and our car would be waiting for us when we left instead of having to wait for the valet to find the car and drive it back to us. Literally seconds later the waiter came up to the table and asked for our valet stub! My only objection to the entire experience was a sticky men's room stall door.

Reply I am glad to be a part of Magical dining at a wonderful restaurant that has been getting rave reviews on here. I just want to point out that many of these places are giving you a great deal, up to half regular price at my place. please take this into consideration when tipping, If service is "Impeccable" or "Superb" and you are not treated differently, Tip extra. the standard is 18-20% of the total bill. i have received many sub 15% tips this month which amounts to 7-10% if you consider what it should have been. please respect your server if you are well taken care of.

Phil

tips should always be based on the quality of the service and experience - not on what the server expects to get.

server
09/24/12   12:47 PM
yes the standard is 15%, time traveler from 1986. i did specify that the tip should reflect the service. if the server gives sub par service and treats you badly, they deserve 15% or less. otherwise please take into consideration the quality of service and the amount of the discount. a $10 tip on a $64 meal is bad enough before you take into account that it would have been over $100 any other month. and please look it up, it is widely accepted that the standard is now 18-20% for excellent service.

Alex
09/25/12   04:18 PM
I agree with "Server" the standard for anyone not under a rock these days is 18-20%....I will leave 15% if they were poor. Remember people they don't make much for hourly...I think barely enough to cover benefits....at least that's the way it was way back in the day when I worked at Planet Hollywood & Rainforest in 96'

I usually tip 15-20%. I tip a high percentage, maybe 30%, at Denny's if the server keeps my coffee coming and delivers hot food, which is the norm. I could care less that NY waiters "expect" 25-30%. Ridiculous. But, on discount deals, I usually tip based on the non-discounted price.

Reply Me and my 2 girlfriends just got back from Flemings and it was great. Our server was phenomenal. and our food was great as well. One of my girlfriends and I both got the filet mignon option and she upgraded hers for $6 and added shrimp and I upgraded mine with crab meat and asparagus for $9. I will say that her filet mignon was very tender but mine was a bit overcooked. That was disappointing but everything else was exceptional that it didnt bother me too much. Our other friend got the mushroom ravioli and loved everything about it. The only downside we had was that we made a reservation 3days in advance for 8:00pm and were not seated until around 8:35-8:40. It is Friday, but i would think with a reservation it would be less of a wait....besides this one seating issue everything was great. would definitely go back!

Reply Disappointed. We had dined here a couple years ago and remembered the meal as being very good. Just dined there tonight and left feeling very disappointed and glad we didn't spend anything on the full price menu. We had the filet mignon, a $5 upgrade, and I was not impressed. Not tender or very well seasoned. Even the coffee was just so-so. Skip Morton's and try somewhere else. Johnny's Hideaway was fabulous and the steak much better.

Morton's was the first restaurant we tried and what a disappointment. We also ordered the filet an it was so small our entire group walked away hungry. When our waiter found out we were ordering from the mdm menu, our service went downhill. He barely spoke to us after that. We won't return to Morton's anytime soon, for sure. MDM is our chance to try restaurants for future dining. If these restaurants are going to only offer three choices, they should be their best if they want us to return. I'm not asking for surf and turf, but don't skimp on portions. There are so many other great restaurants in our city and we'll for sure go back to 3 out of the 4 we tried. Thank you for MDM

Reply Everything about this places screams the way it should be done. The food is superb as is the service. No change in attitude/service when we asked for MDM. We go there once a month anyway, and have future reservations in the system so maybe that was part of it. By far the best of the places we have visited this year for MDM. Flawless

I agree, Seasons 52 always makes you feel very welcome, especially during Magical Dining.

Reply I think in eateries that choose to do the MDM they staff need to be better that if a patron chooses MDM they are treated no differently as it is probably going to be "locals" who know about this charity and are patronising many of the restaurants and will come back. We have done 4 MDM this week and apart from Seasons 52 which is superb we have been treated differently. This past weekend in Tommy Bahamas, the food was excellent, smaller portions unlike other places we have tried the MDM where we were given the same meal. We know this as we say the same food going to other tables at Tommy Bahamas who had ordered off the main menu. OK for $30 I can live with that and as I said the food was really good. The service was satisfactory but not particularly friendly at all , I wouldn't say surly but not far off. At one stage when passing over plates there was a knife left and the waitress with a flick and point of the hand said, "knife too'. I just thought how rude. I could have said it is your job to pick it up not bark orders at diners but just passed it over anyway. There was absolutely no ambiance in there and it was quite loud as we sat in the main dining room which is literally that one huge open room. They were trying to push cocktails on us the minute we arrived at the table and before we sat down and then again after dessert. I would go back to 2/4 of the restaurants we had MDM in at full price but this isn't one of them.

I couldn't agree more we had the same experience. If they want to participate then they need to treat everyone the same. Portion sizes were considerably smaller except the dessert even then the waitress informed us the kitchen staff had made a mistake for serving a full portion and we should be grateful

Reply My husband & I had dinner here last night...ordering from the MDM menu. The view, service and food were all AWESOME! If you want to support this charitable effort and have a first rate dining experience, Hemingway's is a great choice. When I am back in Orlando for another visit, they will definitely be on my itinerary!
